As someone who has worked a lot of freelance I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to be asked to work for free or practically free.

Not that I NEVER do it. If it’s something I really believe in and the client doesn’t have much of a budget, I may decide to donate my time. But ya gotta remember that – when an artist does work for you for free, that’s a donation. It’s a charitable act from someone who probably doesn’t have a ton of time or money to spare.

Which is why if you crop an attitude about it, you should prepare for some shade.

10. Nailed it

“Your work is good, but not good enough that I wanna pay you for it.”

9. Birthday Gifts

Dude it’s twenty bucks, chill.

8. The glamour

I’m very important, but not successful enough to have any money for you.

7. For the art

Yeah cool lemme just spent a hundred bucks on supplies and an entire weekend of my time just for funsies.

6. You pay me

That’s not how this works, that’s now how any of this works.

5. Oh no

Asking for money in return for a service is a “scam.”

4. Shop around

His response is one of the best lines I’ve heard in awhile.

3. License to kill

You’re gonna be singing a different tune pretty soon.

2. Gotta hate it

1. What you deserve

You can be a beggar or a chooser but ya can’t be both.

Respect the time of your artist friends. They’ll really appreciate it if you do.
