I’ve always had a bit of admiration for anyone who gets a tattoo. I’m a little too nervous for it myself. Maybe it’s my general commitment anxiety but the idea of putting an image on my body that will stay for the rest of my life is just super intimidating.

There’s another way for skin to be marked for life, though, and it’s a lot less fun. I’m talking about scarring – from an injury, an accident, or even from birth. But some figure, if I’ve already got marks, why not make them the marks I like?

There’s a long-running practice of using tattoo art to conceal or transform body scars into something more personal. It’s a pretty lovely statement, really.

Here are twelve great examples from the world of Instagram.

12. Running off

There’s something oddly liberating about this.

11. A pirate’s life

There’s a lot of intricate detail here!

10. Wild flowers

Just a little spot of color.

9. Jaws and knees

We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

8. Starter pack

I choose you!

7. Down to the bone

The paleontology nerd inside me is very excited about this.

6. Flower power

You can’t even tell anymore.

5. Tranquil jellyfish

Some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet.

4. Two wolves

When you can’t see the forest for all the trees.

3. Take a dive

Be careful, the landing is only ankle deep.

2. In my orbit

This one literally does revolve around me.

1. Paws for reflection

Super cute.

Honestly, with stuff that good I may warm up to the idea of tattoos yet.
