I’ve always had a bit of admiration for anyone who gets a tattoo. I’m a little too nervous for it myself. Maybe it’s my general commitment anxiety but the idea of putting an image on my body that will stay for the rest of my life is just super intimidating.
There’s another way for skin to be marked for life, though, and it’s a lot less fun. I’m talking about scarring – from an injury, an accident, or even from birth. But some figure, if I’ve already got marks, why not make them the marks I like?
There’s a long-running practice of using tattoo art to conceal or transform body scars into something more personal. It’s a pretty lovely statement, really.
Here are twelve great examples from the world of Instagram.
